Obstructive sleep apnea develops when the muscles and soft tissue at the back of your throat relax and collapse or descend into your airway, interfering with normal breathing. Each “episode” may last only a few seconds.

Of course, one of the best ways to reduce your risks of obesity-related sleep apnea is to lose those excess pounds. But that’s not an easy task, nor is it one that happens overnight. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is one of the most commonly prescribed treatments for OSA sufferers, but it’s not always the best choice. In CPAP, you wear a large mask while sleeping. The mask funnels forced air into your airway during sleep, helping to prevent your airway from collapsing.
While effective, many people find CPAP devices very uncomfortable, which means they may not use them the way they’re supposed to. If you’re not using your sleep apnea device, then you’re not getting its benefits.
